Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them—during a meal, a sports game, or even while you’re sleeping. Knowing what to do in those first few moments can make a big difference in protecting your teeth and easing pain. While Westover Dental is here for you when urgent dental care is needed, here’s what to do before you reach us.
Common Dental Emergencies and How to Respond
- Knocked-Out Tooth
- Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root.
- Rinse gently with water—do not scrub.
- Try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, keep it in milk or saliva.
- Get to the dentist within 30 minutes if possible for the best chance of saving it.
- Broken or Cracked Tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Save any broken pieces and bring them with you.
- Avoid chewing on that side of the mouth.
- Severe Toothache
- Rinse with warm saltwater.
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers (avoid placing aspirin directly on the tooth).
- Apply a cold compress if swelling is present.
- Avoid hot, cold, or sugary foods until you see your dentist.
- Lost Filling or Crown
- If possible, place the crown or filling back using dental cement (available at pharmacies).
- Avoid chewing on that side.
- Bring the crown or filling to your appointment.
- Abscess or Swelling
- Rinse with saltwater several times a day to reduce bacteria.
- Do not attempt to pop or drain the abscess.
- Seek immediate dental care, as infections can spread quickly.
